What You’ll Need
To ensure you’ll have everything you’ll need in the event of a flat tire, you should always keep a few tools handy in your vehicle. Be sure you have a spare tire stored away and that your Owner’s Manual is somewhere you can easily grab it, such as the glove compartment or center console. You should also have a jack in order to raise your vehicle off the ground and a lug or torque wrench to remove the flat tire and attach the spare. If you want extra peace of mind during emergency tire changes, you can also use wheel wedges to keep your Sorento or Soul stable and prevent it from rolling away. Additionally, if your spare or original tires are a bit low on air, you can use a portable inflator to ensure they are safe to make the drive home from City Lake Park.
Getting Started
If you sense that one of your tires has gone flat or is rapidly losing air, you should pull over to an even area away from traffic as soon as possible. After you’ve pulled over, applied your parking brake, and have activated your hazard lights to alert fellow drivers of your presence, you can begin the tire changing process. First, loosen the nuts a bit with your lug or torque wrench. Then, place your jack at the jacking point nearest to the flat tire and turn the handle to raise part of the vehicle. After it is a couple of inches off the ground, you can use your wrench to remove the nuts completely. Make sure you have all of the nuts in a safe place, and then remove the tire. Finishing Up
Now that you’ve removed the flat tire, you can begin attaching the spare. Slide the spare onto the lug bolts of your wheel, then use your hand to apply and tighten the nuts. Once they are somewhat tightened, lower the vehicle a bit and use your wrench to fully tighten each nut using certain patterns. If your wheel has an odd number of bolts, use a star-shaped pattern to tighten their nuts. Alternatively, if you have an even number, you should tighten every other one. After this, lower the vehicle to the ground completely, finish tightening, and check the pressure of each of your tires.
